The following study is drawn from the verbs used in the Thought Adjuster Papers to express what the Adjusters do.  I conducted this study to counteract the impression, assumed in some religious teachings and practices, that the indwelling spirit merely gleams as a luminous but inactive presence.  Knowing what the Adjusters do inspires and facilitates our cooperation.

The Adjusters . . .

Volunteer to indwell, lay plans for man’s eternal career; practice personality approach and mind spiritualization on a working pattern of the waiting mortal mind.

Descend to become man’s experiential partner in the achievement of destiny; flash over material gravity circuits.

Come forth to find man and sonship him; factualize the truth that God is man’s Father; bestow eternal sonship in advance; love; bestow supreme devotion; reveal a supernal love and spiritual ministry; will always be revealing the wonder of God.

            Create unquenchable yearning and incessant longing to be like God and to attain Paradise; link mortals with the Father, draw them closer; always and unerringly point the soul Godward; equalize universe tension; play the sacred and superb game of the ages

            Constantly communicate with the human subject; rejoice to make contact; enjoy communicating directly; speak directly and immediately to first-circlers.

            Urge creatures towards divine ideals; spiritualize us; manipulate our spiritual potential; urge their subjects forward.

            Work persistently, ingeniously, and perfectly; function with wisdom and power; acquire experience, skill, and ability; acquire the balance of spiritual power.

            Improve, modify, adjust, and coordinate our thinking processes; guide, valiantly direct the mind; impart light and truth; teach; effect such mind changes and make such spiritual adjustments as you may willingly and intelligently authorize, in order to gain more influence over the personality directionization; minister efficiently to the higher phases of mind; elevate mortal minds; construct by adjustment and spiritualization a new mind; stimulate thought; receive the admonitions of the spiritual intelligences of the realms and then undertake to redictate or translate these spiritual messages to the . . . mind . . . ; receive a continuous stream of cosmic intelligence; flash gleams of truth; self-acting Adjusters perform numerous exploits within and outside their subjects; often able to contribute factors of spiritual import to the human mind when it flows in the liberated but controlled channels of creative imagination—arrest the mental currents, stay the flow, then divert the idea procession . . . in order to effect deep spiritual transformations.  In slumber attempt to achieve what we have previously fully approved; in sleep try to register their creations in the higher levels of the material mind; a great Thought Adjuster should confer a sublime peace of mind and a superb tranquility of spirit.

Emplace tasks; arrange programs; select trials; choose paths; interested to make your life reasonably difficult and rugged, so that decisions will be stimulated and multiplied; are concerned with our daily doings and the manifold details of our life insofar as these affect our important decisions; always participate in some definite manner in experiences of real right and wrong; place a slight preference on the altruistic impulse; respect our sovereignty of personality, always subject to our will; apply the spiritual lever of uplifting and advancing illumination to the psychic fulcrum we supply; are always waiting to act decisively in accordance with human choice.  Fight with us and for us; bring forth the pictures of the real motive, the final aim, and the eternal purpose of all this difficult, uphill struggle with the commonplace problems of our present material world; show us the spiritual counterpart of all these strenuous material efforts; strengthen us with the spiritual truths of cosmic power while we wrestle with the temporal difficulties of creature existence; cheer us with the clear vision of the eternal outlook of universal life as we gaze in perplexity at the problems of the passing hour; enlighten and inspire us by the universe viewpoint while we toil amidst the handicaps of time and flounder in the maze of uncertainties which beset our mortal life journey; spiritualize our thinking; contribute to our health, happiness, and true prosperity; lend assistance in our short struggles.

Translate immortal souls to divine heights and spiritual levels; recreate you as you really are; Build up spiritual counterparts of our careers; produce morontia duplicates of every concept of the mortal intellect; have the power to subject creature trends to the transforming actions of the motivations and purposes of the emerging morontia soul.

Chiefly concerned with the future life; bring the model careers, the ideal lives, and plans for our intellectual and spiritual development; lay plans for man’s eternal career, adapt, modify, substitute in accordance with circumstances; prepare you for the eternal adventure; active regarding all pertaining to the eternal future; wax great in the rehearsals—practicing in this life for the responsibilities and opportunities to come; register picturizations of destiny with augmenting vividness and conviction; constantly bring forth the pictures of the real motive, the final aim, and the eternal purpose; cheer us with the clear vision of the eternal outlook.

Are particularly tormented by purely sordid and selfish thoughts, distressed by irreverence for that which is beautiful and divine, virtually thwarted by fears and anxieties.

Communicate with each other; function in universe crises; help adjust mistakes and compensate for the shortcomings of all who labor on this planet.

Never fail; patiently await death deliverance; remain with us until the mind ceases to function; do not relax (before their return to Divinington); long for deliverance from material investiture and the habiliments of time.  Greet us on the mansion worlds with full, sympathetic, expressionful affection.  Long for divinity attainment; consummate union; fuse with the soul.
