Metaphysics is the philosophical discipline that examines reality on all levels and the properties of the various regions of reality. Human philosophy has failed in this effort, although philosophy clarified by revelation can do the job acceptably.
In The Urantia Book, I think first of two passages that open the door to this inquiry. Here’s a portion of the section on the cosmic mind, which has been for me the book’s most important one on philosophy.
16:6.5 (192.1) The cosmic mind unfailingly responds (recognizes response) on three levels of universe reality. These responses are self-evident to clear-reasoning and deep-thinking minds. These levels of reality are:
16:6.6 (192.2) 1. Causation—the reality domain of the physical senses, the scientific realms of logical uniformity, the differentiation of the factual and the nonfactual, reflective conclusions based on cosmic response. This is the mathematical form of the cosmic discrimination.
16:6.7 (192.3) 2. Duty—the reality domain of morals in the philosophic realm, the arena of reason, the recognition of relative right and wrong. This is the judicial form of the cosmic discrimination.
16:6.8 (192.4) 3. Worship—the spiritual domain of the reality of religious experience, the personal realization of divine fellowship, the recognition of spirit values, the assurance of eternal survival, the ascent from the status of servants of God to the joy and liberty of the sons of God. This is the highest insight of the cosmic mind, the reverential and worshipful form of the cosmic discrimination.
196:3.2 (2094.1) There are just three elements in universal reality: fact, idea, and relation. The religious consciousness identifies these realities as science, philosophy, and truth. Philosophy would be inclined to view these activities as reason, wisdom, and faith—physical reality, intellectual reality, and spiritual reality. We are in the habit of designating these realities as thing, meaning, and value.

Stuart Kerr added a quote and a characterization of metaphysics.103:6.2 (1135.4) When man approaches the study and examination of his universe from the outside, he brings into being the various physical sciences; when he approaches the research of himself and the universe from the inside, he gives origin to theology and metaphysics.” Metaphysics is a branch of philosophy that explores the nature of being, existence, and reality. Topics of metaphysical investigation include existence, objects and their properties, space and time, cause and effect, and possibility. Metaphysics tries to give a coherent account of the structure of the world, capable of explaining our everyday and scientific perception of the world and being free from contradictions. In metaphysics, there are many different ways to define objects, properties, concepts, and other entities which are claimed to make up the world. While metaphysics may, as a special case, study the entities postulated by fundamental science such as atoms and superstrings, its core topic is the set of categories such as object, property and causality which those scientific theories assume. For example: claiming that “electrons have charge” is a scientific theory; while exploring what it means for electrons to be (or at least, to be perceived as) “objects”, charge to be a “property”, and for both to exist in a topological entity called “space” is the task of metaphysics.
